Week 28: Wrappin' sh!t up.

I bought a couple of Fira Chests from Ikea about five months ago (I remember because it was Halloween, and that is the best night to shop at Ikea because all the young parents who usually shop there are out trick-or-treating with their kids) and just started building one the other day.
Being too lazy to paint it (the wood is unfinished, which means there would be sanding and priming involved - no thanks!), I decided to cover it all up with some pretty gift wrap and modge podge instead. Five dollars (2 sheets of Cavallini & Co. gift wrap, on sale) and an hour later, here she is:
I was feeling pretty chuffed about my new chest until I saw this Anthropologie-inspired table/chest on Design Sponge. Holy crap! Definitely something I'd like to try. I didn't think it was possible, but Design Sponge just keeps getting better.

Week 27: Dolla, Dolla Bill Y'all!

So guess what? G-Uknit turned a year old today! So much has happened since I started this silly blog - I've met lots of new people, made lots of new things, and learned lots of new skills and techniques. Thank you all for reading and spending a little time with me. This past year has also been a busy one for Old Weston Handmade Wonders, in that I think I've actually gone and started a legitmate bidnis. And being a business woman means you gots to be organized. And being organized is way easier when you have a cute filing cabinet. Unfortunately, buying new stuff isn't really an option these days (no money, no space to put stuff), so I've decided to explore small, inexpensive ways to improve what I've already got, and make some of my more boring possessions a bit more special. After a trip to the dollar store, I was able to transform my undergrad-era filing cabinet into this pretty little thing: One roll of that sticky "Magic Cover" was more than enough to prettify the outside of the cabinet, and it took a whopping three minutes to do. Stay tuned for more dolla, dolla bill makeovers!

She Saves Seashells

Over a year ago, my friend Lisa gave me a pair of seashells she found in California, hoping that I would fashion them into some kind of accessory. Well, it's her birthday today, so here we go:
Lisa, I hope you don't mind, I couldn't help but add a little sparkle. Lisa, I've known you since I was twelve. Together we went to Massey Hall to see Morrissey; we hopped on a bus to Hamilton to see the Verve; we hopped on a bus to Hamilton (again) to see Morrissey (again); we waited in the Warehouse parking lot all day so we could see the Violent Femmes; we smoked a joint in Kings College Circle as casually as if we were eating ice cream cones before going to see Patti Smith (and you left your seat, which was so much closer to the stage than mine, to stand next to me for the encore); we stayed out all night and fell asleep beneath glowing bank towers and bronze cows. Do you remember all that? Because I sure do. Happy birthday.

Week 26: Cloud Carving

Coming soon, a wee bit of weather for your darling sweater.

Week 25: Mo' bears, mo' problems.

As you've probably already gathered by now, I'm hooked on crocheting small bears ("hooked," get it?! Ha!). Just can't seem to stop. It's even worse now that I'm exploring accessories (buttons, kerchiefs, scalloped collars, and next up - bowties!). Finished these little ones two weekends ago:

Week 24: Keeping my place

There are days when I all I want to do is read. But sometimes I have to put the book down and attend to life. Having a pretty patchwork bookmark makes this easier. This little scrap is my first attempt at patch-working (is that a real verb?). Too much time spent hanging around The Workroom has led me to believe that I need to make a quilt, so here I am practicing. Also, weaving ribbon through lace is a tremendous amount of fun.
